FROM A TYPE BEAT TO A VOCAL TAKE
Record vocals over YouTube beats
in FL Studio.
Give the beat and microphone their own mixer inserts. Barz handles finding and loading the beat; FL Studio records your voice and plays the arrangement.
Load the YouTube beat into the Playlist
Open Barz, choose YouTube and select a beat. Wait for its waveform and the Playlist link. The current Windows workflow puts the linked WAV on Mixer Insert 1. Keep that insert for the beat and check tempo estimates against the producer’s information.
Use FL’s Song mode to play the Playlist. The website player stays silent; FL controls the loaded audio. If you already have a licensed WAV, you can use FL’s ordinary Audio Clip workflow. Barz is useful when you want to keep browsing beats, playlists and lyrics inside the session.
Set up a separate microphone track
These FL steps follow Image-Line’s audio-recording manual. Menu names can vary with your FL version.
- Use FL Studio Producer Edition or higher. On Windows, choose an ASIO driver in Audio settings, preferably your interface manufacturer’s driver.
- Choose an unused mixer insert, such as Insert 2, and select your microphone’s input. Leave the beat on Insert 1.
- Link a Playlist lane through Track mode → Audio track to your vocal insert. Choose EXT pickup for a dry recording and arm that insert.
- Enable audio in FL’s recording filter. Use Record and record into the Playlist; the one-click recording toolbar also offers this route.
- Monitor with headphones. If using interface direct monitoring, disable FL’s external-input monitoring to avoid hearing two copies.
Protect the take while you record
Enable Protect take in Barz before starting. Beat changes wait until you stop FL and release the lock. Write in the lyrics panel, then switch to Read mode when you want Space to control playback instead of typing a space.
After the take, stop playback and audition another beat if needed. The linked source updates for the new selection. To preserve an earlier beat, create a separate copy before replacing it. Use Keep with project and save the FL project after the audio is ready; keep independent WAV files with the project when moving it to another computer.
Common recording problems
The beat ended up in my vocal recording
Check the recording insert and its inputs. Recording the Master can capture the whole mix. Use a dedicated microphone insert.
The microphone input is missing or delayed
Check the selected ASIO device and input. Prefer the interface’s native driver; buffer settings and monitoring paths affect latency.
I hear an old beat or the new selection does not appear
Stop FL, check Protect take, and use Repair beat link. Do not keep adding duplicate clips. If automatic restoration cannot verify FL’s retained source, follow the picker fallback in the Playlist recovery guide.
Space types into my lyrics or nothing plays
Switch Barz to Read mode and check that FL is in Song mode. Confirm the loaded waveform has finished preparing and the beat clip is present in the current Arrangement.
Ready for a complete song?
Get the producer’s licence or permission before releasing the recording. A preview or tagged beat is not automatically licensed for release. The beat licensing guide explains what to check.
